The Reds were locked at 1-1 with the Magpies for over an hour, after Harry Maguire's header cancelled out Luke Shaw's unfortunate own goal, but Bruno Fernandes - who had his 11th penalty for the club saved by Karl Darlow following 10 successful spot-kicks - eventually found the net from open play in the 86th minute.

Then the floodgates opened as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with his first-ever goal in senior football - and Marcus Rashford followed up with emphatic finishes of their own to secure a comprehensive 4-1 away win at St James' Park.

Here's what Solskjaer had to say in his post-match interview on MUTV...

MAGUIRE INSPIRED US“It was a test of character anyway after the 6-1 defeat last time and going 1-0 down so early on made it even more so. But it was great resilience, inspired by the captain.”

“[It was] great defending. Of course, he's in charge. When we've got the ball, he's so calm and we can control it with him. And he had some great chances [to score] as well.”SUCCESSFUL TEAM SELECTION“We have so many games coming up and you pick a team that you think is going to get a result in that game. You look at the opposition and you look at yourself and what is the best balance and I thought we found the right one today. There were some very good performances from the ones who came in since last time and the ones who came off the bench did really well. The ones who stayed on the bench as well - they were our supporters tonight so there was a great attitude and team spirit.”

“David does that and we've seen it so many times. It's one of those fantastic saves when you think it's going to go in. He's just got [great] arms.” PRESSURE PAID OFF

“The more chances we created and the more pressure we were building, I felt it [the second goal] would come. It was just about looking for the extra pass maybe, and not the finish too early. Don't panic, don't rush it. We spoke about this at half-time and five minutes before time, that's plenty of time [to score it].”

“It was great speed, tempo, quality, timing. I thought they kept their heads really well and that's testament to their characters in a difficult game at a difficult time for us.”WAN-BISSAKA'S HISTORIC STRIKE“It was a cross! No, he was due his goal. I thought today we wanted him higher up the pitch, making runs in behind. It was great for him.”

“What a centre-forward's performance. He didn't get too many balls to work with into his feet but he was working for every single one of them. He was running in behind, he was pressing, he was tackling, winning headers, everything a centre-forward should do.”
