Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Marcus Rashford to become as good as Harry Kane ahead of Sunday's shootout between the two England forwards.

Rashford is in arguably the best form of his short career with five goals in his last eight games for Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has benefited from playing as a striker under interim boss Solskjaer, having been mainly used in a wider role by Jose Mourinho, and is hoping to get the nod ahead of Romelu Lukaku at Wembley.

United face the Premier League's joint top scorer in Kane, who has 21 goals for club and country this season, as they try to cut a 10-point gap to third-placed Tottenham.

However Solskjaer believes Rashford is maturing into an equally fearsome striker, who now has the physical attributes to make the most of his potential.

'He can become a top, top striker,' said the Norwegian. 'We can talk about Harry Kane and his class, and I'm sure Marcus as well. He's got the potential to get up there.

'He's got frightening pace and he's now become stronger and can hold the ball up for us. He's a great link player.

'He's been brought up here. There were a couple of sessions here with the young kids — Chongy (Tahith Chong), Angel (Gomes), him and Jesse (Lingard), and they played together in a certain way. He's a very exciting player to work with.'

Kane and Rashford will be on opposing sides as Tottenham take on Manchester United

HARRY KANE'S RECORD THIS SEASON

Premier League: 21 games, 14 goals, four assists

Champions League: Six games, four goals, one assist

FA Cup: One game, one goal

Carabao Cup: Two games, one goal, one assist

MARCUS RASHFORD'S RECORD THIS SEASON

Premier League: 18 games, six goals, six assists

Champions League: Six games, one goal

FA Cup: One game

Total: 25 games, seven goals, six assists

Solskjaer will become the first United manager to win his first six games in charge, eclipsing the great Sir Matt Busby, if he can oversee victory at Spurs.

The 45-year-old is on loan from Molde until the end of the season, but has not yet had talks with Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward about the possibility of extending his United return beyond that.

'No, we've not had that conversation,' added Solskjaer. 'You don't plan five or six months ahead and then suddenly after two weeks change that. Nothing's changed.'

Intriguingly, he is up against Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is to favourite to land the United job next summer.

'He's got good players, the same as me,' said Solskjaer. 'It's easier to play an attacking way, and your way, when you've got good players.'

United caretaker boss Solskjaer has not held any talks about possibly extending his stay
