Manchester United were able to hang on to beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 David De Gea made an incredible 11 saves during the second half of the matchMan United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise after the game

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes David de Gea is well on the way to becoming Manchester United's greatest ever goalkeeper after his match-winning display at Wembley.

De Gea pulled off 11 second-half saves to deny Tottenham as Solskjaer continued his brilliant start with a sixth consecutive victory as manager.

The Norwegian claimed De Gea is rivaling Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel as the club's best.

David De Gea ended up being the match winner for Man United after making a lot of saves

David De Gea made 11 saves in the second half, more than any goalkeeper in a full match so far

'David was unbelievable,' he said. 'We've had some great goalkeepers and he's challenging Edwin and Peter for the No 1 spot historically.

'I've played with a few fantastic goalkeepers, we have a tradition of having them and he has grown and grown. David deserves that man of the match.'

United might still be six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League but Solskjaer already has eyes on toppling Spurs, who are third in the table.

His message after the most impressive win of his short reign was that the gap between his and Mauricio Pochettino's side is by no means insurmountable.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for De Gea, likening him to the greats

'This game was never about me or Mauricio, never,' he added. 'For us, it's three points and we had to beat them today if we have a chance to catch them.

'We were 10 points behind them, now we're seven. Seven points, that's catchable. Thirteen, impossible, 10 difficult. Now we have a chance.'

Part of United's regeneration has come in midfield, with Paul Pogba's stunning ball on the break setting Marcus Rashford clear to score the winner just before half-time.

Pogba claimed Solskjaer has loosened the shackles and allowed more expression than previous manager Jose Mourinho.

Paul Pogba is enjoying playing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he can be more attacking now

'I am enjoying playing my football now,' he said pointedly. 'I like to be more attacking, I had to defend too much before and that is not my best attribute. This is my position.'

Pochettino, meanwhile, suggested Tottenham's second-half display was the best he has witnessed since joining the club in 2014.

'I am so pleased and I'm proud,' he said. 'After four and a half years, the second half was the best performance I have seen Tottenham play. We created more than enough chances to win the game.'
