Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has assured the Premier League Manchester United players will follow coronavirus guidelines amid calls for socially distanced celebrations.

United travel to Liverpool on Sunday in one of the most emotionally-charged rivalries in world football, with United three points clear at the Premier League summit.

Premier League referees have been told to specify to club captains and managers what is expected of them prior to matches and players have been instructed not to hug each other.

The Premier League chief executive Richard Masters wrote to clubs reiterating 'handshakes, high fives and hugs must be avoided' following 'concerning scenes' in some of the weekend's FA Cup third round ties.

"It's an emotional game, football, but we have to understand the players when they celebrate, " Solskjaer said.

Paul Pogba scored a 71st minute winner to send United top at Burnley on Tuesday night and the midfielder hugged a number of teammates during the celebrations.

Solskjaer says United 'will do their best' to follow the guidelines but insists it is difficult to enforce due to the natural reaction of footballers to embrace after scoring.
