Sporting Lisbon are considering renaming their stadium after Cristiano Ronaldo when he retires.

Ronaldo burst onto the scene as a teenager for the Portuguese club before securing his move to Manchester United.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas told Tuttosport: 'It's a theory we will not shelve and obviously we'd be very proud to have his name associated with us.

He went on to explain how important it is that the Juventus forward is used to inspire the next generation at Sporting.

'Cristiano is certainly the best Portuguese player of all time and one of the best athletes in the history of the sport.

It is now 17 years since Ronaldo made waves at the Sporting academy and not doubt he'd relish having the stadium named after him.

The 50,000-seater arena is called Estadio Jose Alvalade after the club's founder and first member.
