Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has made a 'guarantee' that his side will continue to 'compete' next season, even if they do sell star midfielder Bruno Fernandes, amid Manchester United's interest.

While United have been linked with a host of names, Newcastle United academy graduate Sean Longstaff and Sporting captain Fernandes are two that have made the Norwegian's short-list.

“And this crowded stadium is proof that we have thousands of fans scattered throughout Europe and the world.”

Prior to the game Varandas attempted to calm the nerves of Sporting fans who are worried their best player may be set to leave this summer.

"What I know and the guarantee I can guarantee is that this Sporting will be ready to compete with our ambitions," he said when asked about Fernandes' future.

Fernandes played the opening half and scored a penalty, though his side went on to lose the game 2-1 in his absence.

The prospect of signing the 24-year-old has excited United fans after he scored 32-goals from midfield last season, led his side to Portuguese cup glory and starred as Portugal became the inaugural Nations League champions.
