A new rule in the FA Cup that came into effect for this year's tournament will impact Manchester United as they take on Wolves in the quarter final on Saturday evening.

The FA explained the reasoning for the rule change in August, saying: “For the FA Cup, FA Trophy and FA Vase, the accumulation of yellow cards will be Competition specific.

United's stand-in skipper Ashley Young is suspended for the trip to Mollineux, which could see United book their place in a semi-final at Wembley, after picking up two yellow cards in the cup against Arsenal and Chelsea.

So in the FA Cup any player who gets two bookings up to and including the quarter finals will be banned for the next game.

Usually suspensions picked up in cup competitions can be served in the Premier League, and vice versa, but this campaign is the first in England in which yellow cards are now tournament specific.

This means that Young will miss the clash with Wolves and Nemanja Matic is at risk of missing the semi final should he pick up a yellow card against Wolves.

This means that suspensions now only occur in the tournament that the player received the card in.
