Manchester United opted against signing Bruno Fernandes this summer due to concerns over the Portuguese’s ball retention, according to report.

The Portuguese midfielder, who scored 20 goals and claimed 13 assists last season, was reportedly subject to serious interest from Man United, whose need for a new central midfielder was clear after losing both Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

However, despite signing Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, United failed to land Fernandes or indeed any midfielder before the August 8 deadline.

According to the Daily Mail‘s Jack Gaughan, Solskjaer and Co. opted against signing the 24-year-old amid doubts over his decision making in possession.

While Fernandes operates under a level of risk – something valuable in a midfielder – United considered his pass completion rate of 75.1 percent to be too low, especially when you consider that this was in the Primera Liga, a comparatively slower league compared with the vicissitudes of Premier League football.

It can be very tempting to clamour for names like that of Fernandes, or Alexis Sanchez, or Bastian Schweinsteiger, or Radamel Falcao, or – okay, you get the idea.

But Solskjaer has set in motion an important change of tack: avoiding pursuing exciting players in favour of signing the right ones.
