Manchester United are tailing Tottenham in the race to sign Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale.

According to ESPN, United's interest in Bale is genuine but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's transfer priority remains Jadon Sancho, but a move for the England international hinges on Borussia Dortmund caving on their valuation of the 20-year-old winger.

Bale represents a back-up plan, but United's stance has opened the door for Spurs who are primed to launch an audacious bid for a player who helped cement the north London club's status as a credible Champions League force during his time at White Hart Lane.

Real are said to be prepared to let Bale depart for as little as £18million but his astronomical £600,000-a-week salary has proved a stumbling block with regards to a potential exit.

More: Manchester United FC. Bale scored 56 goals in 203 appearances for Spurs between 2007 and 2013 after arriving from Southampton in a deal worth an initial £5m in May 2007.

Bale is reluctant to spend another season in the wilderness and wants to resurrect his career in familiar surroundings.
