Former Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge is surprised that Maurizio Sarri has kept his job at Chelsea after the club failed to mount a Premier League title challenge during his first season in charge.

The Italian enjoyed an excellent start at Stamford Bridge, guiding Chelsea to an 18-game unbeaten run, however, poor results either side of the new year saw his position called into question.

Chelsea’s board members are also said to have been concerned at the public criticism of Sarri’s tactics by sections of the club’s supporters, notably when they chanted ‘f*** Sarri-ball’ during the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Although Sarri steered Chelsea to a third-place finish and a Europa League final against Arsenal, Bridge believes that the gap between them and the two top clubs Manchester City and Liverpool was too wide.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Bridge said: ‘Some say it’s been successful but it’s been very up and down.

‘They’ve been very inconsistent and consistency is what you want of a big team. That’s what’s going to win you the Premier League. I don’t really know where he [Sarri] stands. I’m very surprised that he’s still there.

‘They are third [in the Premier League] and they are in a final [the Europa League] but as an ex-player and a Chelsea fan, they would like to see them higher up in the table.

‘I know it’s third but they want to see them competing [for the Premier League title].’

What Edu's told Arsenal about taking technical director role

After a 0-0 draw against Leicester City secured Chelsea third spot in the Premier League and consequently, a place in the Champions League group stages next season, Sarri insisted that he had delivered the main target expected of him.

However, when asked whether or not he would still be in charge of the club next season, the former Napoli boss responded: ‘I think so, but I am not sure.

‘As you know very well, I love English football. I love the Premier League; it’s fantastic and the level is the best in the world, I think. The atmosphere in the stadiums is wonderful. I would like very much to stay here.’
