Wayne Rooney has hailed Kevin De Bruyne as one of the best three players in the world and compared the Manchester City midfielder to two Premier League legends.

De Bruyne has developed into one of the best players in world football since joining Man City from Wolfsburg in 2015, scoring 34 goals and providing 65 assists in 154 Premier League matches.

Rooney insists playing against De Bruyne was 'never easy' and says the Belgian superstar reminds him of former Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs and Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard.

'There's no doubt Man City's biggest weapon is De Bruyne - arguably one of the top three players in the world right now,' Rooney wrote in a column for The Times.

'Playing against him was never, ever, easy and I'll always remember Everton using me and Morgan Schneiderlin, in a 4-4-2, against a City midfield of De Bruyne, David Silva and Fernandinho, with Sterling dropping in.

He drifts out to that right-hand side and plays some brilliant balls whipped in, like Stevie used to.

Manchester United and England's record goalscorer, now at Championship club Derby County, added: 'You watch, when he's in possession in space other players start running and that's the biggest compliment you can pay a midfielder.
