Where Manchester United stand on Jadon Sancho transfer interest

The summer transfer window only opened on Monday but there is already exasperation among the Manchester United Twitterati that they have not signed anyone.

Chelsea have already bought Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and Manchester City agreed deals for Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake this week alone.

That United only secured Champions League football on the last day of the league season does not wash with those who have pointed out Chelsea did likewise and had already bought Ziyech from Ajax and Werner from RB Leipzig.

Just like in 2017 and 2019, United want to sign Jadon Sancho to reinforce an attack already enhanced this year by the addition of Bruno Fernandes.

This is the current state of play on Sancho:

Is Sancho United's priority target?

Yes. Relegation to the Europa League last year scuppered a move for Sancho but now United are back in the Champions League he is their principal target. United had to turn to fall-back option Daniel James just over a year ago but their buoyant end to the season has left them confident of doing a deal for Sancho.

United wanted to buy Sancho from City when he was 17 in 2017 but their rivals blocked a move and were grateful for Borussia Dortmund's £8million offer. Sancho was emboldened by how Ousmane Dembele had developed at Dortmund prior to his £135.5m move to Barcelona and assured of regular playing time amid doubts over a pathway to the City first-team.

How much do Dortmund want?

Dortmund have briefed their asking price is now €120m (£108m), slightly down from the €130m they initially valued Sancho at. If United meet that fee it would be a club and British record and only the seventh nine-figure transfer in football history.

Have United made a bid?

No. German reports of a £90m offer on Monday were inaccurate and seen as a tactic by Dortmund to vainly whip up an auction for a player United effectively have a free run at, or panic United into making an early bid.

Does Sancho want to join United?

Yes. Sancho is in line to more than triple his £75,000 weekly wages at Dortmund and has a warm rapport with England teammates Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. Sancho enjoyed his time in Manchester with City and confided in friends he could see himself returning to Manchester before he left for Dortmund. Londoner Sancho moved to Manchester at the age of 15 as 'there were a lot of bad influences'.

Sancho has always harboured ambitions to play in the Premier League, as well as the Champions League, and his marketability would go through the roof if he joins United. Sancho will be given the choice of the number seven or 11; numbers traditionally donned by a winger.

Do Dortmund want to sell Sancho?

Yes and no. No, because Sancho is one of their best players and they would be weaker without him against an already superior Bayern Munich. Yes, because they stand to make a profit in excess of 100 per cent on Sancho and need revenue amid the pandemic.

Dortmund have the highest average attendance in Europe but have not had a full house at Signal Iduna Park since February 29. Dortmund announced in June games behind closed doors led to losses of €45m.

So why do Dortmund keep saying they want to keep him?

It's all part of the game and their posturing keeps Sancho's re-sale value high. Dortmund need to be seen to be doing everything they can to make it difficult for United so they do not relinquish Sancho for a lower fee. A source in Germany said Dortmund 'want to own the story'.

Dortmund have a sporting director in Michael Zorc, who speaks on the record on a near-weekly basis and United operate very differently. They still do not have a director of football/head of football/technical director.

Ed Woodward, the United executive vice-chairman, hardly ever speaks on the record other than during the quarterly conference calls and has not had a sit-down with MUTV since the 2015 pre-season tour. His Dortmund counterpart, Hans-Joachim Watzke, often gives on-the-record quotes.

Have Dortmund set a deadline to sell Sancho?

Yes - August 10, which is two days before Dortmund's first friendly fixture in Austria and the day of United's Europa League quarter-final in Cologne. The transfer window does not close until October 5 and the Premier League season starts on September 12.

Again, invoking a deadline makes Dortmund look like hardliners when, if they received €100m up front on August 11, would accept it.

Is Sancho training with Dortmund now?

No, Sancho is currently on holiday but reported at the club's training ground on Thursday for a coronavirus test. Dortmund's training camp starts on Monday.

Do City have first refusal?

Yes, but they have no intention of re-signing Sancho, whose relationship with Pep Guardiola deteriorated after he was not named in the pre-season tour squad in 2017.

"No, no. No, he decided to leave, why should he decide to come back?" Guardiola said last month. "We wanted him to stay like Eric Garcia and Phil [Foden] now. He decided like Leroy [Sane] now, so when he decided to move to Dortmund it’s not because he is going to decide to come back one year later. It would make no sense.

"He didn’t want to be here, so that is why I think he doesn't want to come back here."

City will receive 15 per cent of any transfer fee Dortmund receive for Sancho.
