Cesc Fabregas has revealed how Roy Keane once gave Gerard Pique a dressing down over their friendship.

Former Manchester United defender Pique grew up in the same Barcelona youth system with Fabregas before the duo moved onto pastures new, with the midfielder joining Arsenal.

Fabregas lined up against United in the 2005 FA Cup Final for the Gunners, helping his side to win on penalties after a goalless draw the Reds had dominated.

Pique was not involved in the game for United but was on the receiving end of a Keane rant due to a tackle from Fabregas in the game.

Fabregas had knee'd the United captain, who sought out Pique over his friendship with his international teammate.

Fabregas told the Telegraph: “Gerard Pique, who was at Manchester United then, told me about this afterwards and I never knew about it.

“He told me that me and Roy went into a challenge, which I remember. It was 50/50 and I must have caught him with my knee in his quad. And I got him a little bit.

“At half-time, he went to Pique and started shouting at him because he knew we were friends.

“A bit of swearing. I can't say the exact words but it was fun.”

Fabregas subsequently left the Gunners to join Barcelona in 2011 - reuniting him with Pique - before returning to the Premier League with Chelsea three years later.

United showed interest in Fabregas on his return to England but the Spaniard revealed that meeting Jose Mourinho convinced him to move to Stamford Bridge.

He said: “When I told my agent I wanted to go back to the Premier League, I thought it was Arsenal. But it didn't happen.

“Arsenal had the option but they didn't take it, so we had to find other solutions and that's when we met Jose Mourinho.

“I listened to Jose because of who he is and because of the respect I had for him, and I ended up loving his words, his ideas, his future at Chelsea, what he wanted from me.”
