Manchester United will be informed if Borussia Dortmund make a formal offer for Memphis Depay in the summer transfer window.

United are pursuing a transfer for Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and Lyon forward Depay has been tipped to replace him at the Bundesliga club.

Depay, 26, failed to live up to his grand billing during a frustrating 18 months at Old Trafford following a £26.3million arrival from PSV Eindhoven, making just one start under Jose Mourinho before his move to Lyon in January 2017.

Despite underwhelming during his Premier League spell United were keen to protect Depay's potential and included a buy-back clause as part of the £16m deal which saw him move to France.

It means United will be offered the opportunity to sign Depay if any offer is accepted by Lyon, with Dortmund reportedly leading the chase.

Speaking earlier in the year, Lyon’s director of football Juninho stated that Depay is happy at the club and likely to be offered a contract extension, with his current deal set to expire in 2021.

"Manchester [United] has a priority if several clubs line up to buy him,” Juninho told the club’s official website. “But we have not received any offers so far. He is really happy right now in Lyon. He deserves the armband like others.

“Rudi (Garcia) will soon make his decision. He is a technical leader. We will discuss an extension of contract by the end of the year.”

When Jose Mourinho was asked why United had insisted on a buy-back clause, he said at the time: "Because potentially he's a very good player. I think when Mr Van Gaal decided to buy him he did well, he knew him very well from the national team, he was very young when at the World Cup he had flashes of top quality.

"He was playing well in Holland, we know the Dutch league is not the same but he was showing very good things. So I think Mr Van Gaal and Manchester United did very well to buy him.

"He didn't succeed in his 18 months but he's very young so I think it's important for the club to complete control of this talent and we all wish he plays very, very well at Lyon and why not to come back because everyone here likes him."
