Why Man Utd could give Nemanja Matic new contract and still allow January transfer exit

Manchester United may extend Nemanja Matic’s contract in order to get a higher transfer fee in January.

The Serbia international is due to be released in the summer but United may trigger the option to extend his contract for another year.

The decision to extend Matic’s deal is not because the Red Devils want to keep the midfielder at the club, but it would ensure they are able to push for a higher fee to sell the 31-year-old.

The Telegraph report Matic is eyeing a move away in January and United are willing to let him go for the right price.

Matic has fallen below Scott McTominay and Fred in the pecking order and is now looking for a move away from Old Trafford.

The midfielder was signed by Jose Mourinho from Chelsea in 2017 and had been a fixture in the side.

However, since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of his first full season, Matic has fallen out of favour.

The Norwegian is looking to change the style of play at United and it seems Matic does not feature in his long term plans.

Despite selling Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera recently, the Old Trafford hierarchy are still willing to allow another midfielder to go.

Matic has attracted interest from a variety of teams but Italy appears the most likely destination for the ageing Serbian.

United have struggled this season and currently sit seventh in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils appear to be cut adrift from the top four at this early stage, trailing local rivals Manchester City by nine points.

United have fared better in the Europa League and top their group on ten points.

Solskjaer’s side are almost certain to go through but will need to win their remaining matches in order to top the group.
