Romelu Lukaku was been ‘rested’ with a ‘small niggled’ and will miss the opening friendly of Manchester United’s pre-season campaign against Perth Glory.

The Belgium international’s future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer long, but the 26-year-old travelled with the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team squad to Australia earlier this week.

Having slipped down the pecking order following Solskjaer’s appointment in December, Lukaku has grown increasingly disillusioned with life at Old Trafford and went on the record to air his desire to play in Serie A.

Inter and Antonio Conte are desperate to bring Lukaku to Italy but the Nerazzurri are struggling to come up with a financial package that would tempt United, who spent £75million on the former Everton striker, into selling.

Lukaku missed a training session earlier this week with what was officially described as ‘a little problem’ and instructed to take part in ‘alternative gym-based training’ alongside Anthony Martial.

Goalkeeper Lee Grant, as well as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly miss out but there is a first start for summer signing Daniel James.

The Wales international winger joined in a £15million deal from Swansea last month and has impressed Solskjaer with his attitude and application during his early training sessions.

Fellow new recruit Aaron Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, starts on the substitutes’ bench alongside Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.
